Truman in WWI doughboy uniform, ca. 1918, Truman Library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My nephew was unaware that Veteran\u2019s Day was originally called Armistice Day\u2014in reference to the day fighting stopped in World War I, \u00a0\u201cThe Great War.\u201d This ceasefire occurred\u00a0at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In our country, Armistice Day was originally designated as a day to honor America\u2019s World War I veterans annually. However, in 1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation which renamed the anniversary \u201cVeteran\u2019s Day\u201d and extended the recognition to include US veterans of <i>all<\/i> wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In keeping with this collective spirit, I reflect today on the millions of Americans\u2014including my father, the majority of his fellow agents, and all of the presidents he protected\u2014who have dutifully served in our armed forces.
